Course Aim

This course is designed to give students an experience within the engineering technologies and to prepare students for entry into third level education or the world of engineering industry. During the course students have access to technical workshops, fitted with a variety of relevant equipment They have the opportunity to learn exact skills in work place which satisfies the highest safety standards. Students gain a theoretical knowledge and practical skills in measuring and inspection techniques, the properties of engineering materials and machining methods, the use of a range of tools and equipment. As a course feature work experience helps learners to make links which often result in employment.

Career Opportunities & Progression Routes

Students who participate in this course are eligible to apply for apprenticeships or go directly into the workforce. Those students who successfully complete the course can gain entry to third level education by an alternative route known as the Higher Education Links Scheme, whereby students can gain entry to specific courses in the Institute of Technology, using their QQI examination results instead of their Leaving Certificate results.

Entry Requirements

This course is aimed at students who have completed the Leaving Certificate, Leaving Certificate Applied, Leaving Certificate Vocational and mature students with an interest in engineering with suitable candidates being selected by interview.

Fees

 

Student Services: €200.00 this includes a non-refundable deposit, refer Note 1 hereunder

PPC (Gov Levy) €200.00*( Exemptions may apply refer Note 2 hereunder)

Examination fees: QQI Level 5 €50 QQI Level 6 €60

Registration charges by professional bodies - These will be outlined under Additional fees for applicable courses. 

Additional costs which may include: Books, Uniforms, /Clothing and Equipment (e.g. Chefs Knives etc.)

Note 1: A non-refundable deposit of €50 to reserve a place on a PLC course.

Note 2: The following categories of participant are exempt from paying the contribution:

  • Full medical Card holders in their own right and their dependent children
  • Those who are eligible under the student grant scheme
  • Those in receipt of the Back to Education Allowance (BTEA) OR Vocational Training Opportunities Scheme (VTOS) ALLOWANCE.
